The plane is in the air

Sorry for the late posting, been so busy…
The Kennel officially opened for business last Friday night as Jarrod Ruby (drums) and Gerard Smith (bass) of Third Border arrived to set up and get sounds for the weekend’s recording session for their new album.

The wonderfulness of the live room revealed itself in the 20 minutes it took Wharton to get an awesome drum sound. The bass sounded equally massive, so all was in fine shape the following day when guitarist and principal songwriter Ben Miller showed up to begin work.

We laid basic tracks for 11 songs, plus a few guitar overdubs and heavenly cello by Megan Leach (The Ambitious Orchestra).
The weekend was not without its problems but in the end all deemed it a success and that’s what counts. Kudos by the way to our new intern Andrew, who not only fetched a mean cup of coffee but, more crucially, manned the console all day Sunday and was unflappable throughout an 8-hour session.
Third Border returns June 28 to lay down cello (Chris Welcome of The Push-Pull Quartet and Chris Welcome Quartet), vibes (Sean McCaul) and vocals. In the meantime we’ll continue to wire up the outboard gear, complete soundproofing, and generally get our shit together.

“The Kennel is a perfect spot for capturing the excitement and immediacy of a live sound. With lots of analog gear the vibe in this sweet Bushwick room is full of texture and warmth — both sonically and personally. Billy, the engineer and also a great producer, is really sensitive to listening for that magic moment and focusing everyone in the room towards it. You’ll leave happy!“
