A great drum sound
Posted 1 September 2008, 11:36 by The Kennel
We continue to be impressed by how easy it is to get a great drum sound in our live room.
Mark Kovacik (below) was in with James on Friday night, capturing some drum parts by Dan Gottesman (Chris Muir also laid down some bass guitar).
We used a matched pair of AKG 414As for the overheads: Sennheiser 441s on the toms; a Shure SM7 and an SM57 above and below the snare, respectively; an AKG D112 and an EV RE20 on the kick; and an Earthworks Omni 30 feet away at the opposite end of the room.
In less than 30 minutes, we had a kick-ass sound. Gotta love that!

“My experience at the Kennel was top notch. James Pertusi is, by far, the best engineer I’ve worked with. The quality of tone he recorded for my trombone reflects exactly how I hear my sound. The room has the warmth of the older jazz studios, with the level of sound control you expect out of the modern studios. I can’t wait to record at the Kennel again.“
